Derby Cathedral

Director of Music at Derby Cathedral

Alexander’s main work centres around his position of Director of Music at Derby Cathedral, the mother church for the Diocese of Derby. Alexander sits on the Senior Management Team of the Cathedral and is responsible for one of the most rapidly expanding Cathedral music departments in the country. Alexander directs the Cathedral Choir, which consists of Boy and Girl Choristers, Junior Choral Scholars, and Lay Clerks (adult professional singers) for services, concerts, tours, recordings, broadcasts and other high profile events. He also accompanies the Voluntary Choir and Junior Choir for services, and manages the Music in Schools programme and all other Music operations.

Since arriving at the Cathedral in 2019, Alexander has raised the profile of Cathedral Music in Derby, professionalised the ‘back row’ of Lay Clerks, established a Junior Choral Scholarship Scheme, launched the Music in Schools programme (which currently works with over 900 children in 18 schools across Derby and Derbyshire each week), established a keyboard element to the Music in Schools programme (which sees a number of children learn the piano and organ each week), launched a Music Patron Scheme (to help fund music at the Cathedral), launched Small Sounds (the Cathedral’s early years music group), and re-launch the Junior Choir (the Cathedral’s pre-chorister training choir).
